According to this online article, it was previously known as Tai Shan Ting Cemetery, a Teochew burial ground which had approximately 25,000 to 30,000 graves.

It was owned by Ngee Ann Kongsi and was cleared in the 1950s to make way for commercial development.
The first building built there was the 10-storey high Ngee Ann Building. However, it was unprofitable and reportedly haunted. It was torn down in 1985 to make way for the new Ngee Ann City, followed by Wisma Atria and ION Orchard. It is so interesting. From a Feng Shui perspective, it is easy to see why Ngee Ann City was designed the way it is now.
